Lanyon's work focuses on the disquiet that defines our lives now, in contrast to the perceived social certainties of the past. It explores the climate of personal, social and political tension that this creates.
The work is rooted in ideas of the Anthropocene, the ‘Human Epoch’, and our rapidly changing relationship with the natural world. Using a range of materials and media across painting, drawing and sculpture, the work merges analogue techniques and materials with contemporary technology and production to further highlight these tensions. Recent work has closely explored the concepts of shelter and protection from apocalyptic or destructive events, through both external and internal agency, via the creation of actual protective shelters along with psychological or emotional refuges.
After graduating from the Royal College of Art, London, Lanyon was selected as one of the inaugural Saatchi Gallery & Channel 4's '4 New Sensations'. His work is included in the Zabludowicz Collection.
He is currently based in Bristol, UK, and an Associate of Spike Island.
